The recording for this lesson has not been published yet.
A-roll is your main story: the person talking, the screen recording, the thing the narration is about. B-roll is supporting footage laid on top of it to show what the A-roll says. Good B-roll adds clarity. Bad B-roll is decoration that pulls the eye away from the message.
In this lesson you add B-roll and overlays to your retention cut from lesson 1.2 so it becomes the finished module deliverable.
In CapCut desktop the bottom video track is the main track. Anything you drag above it becomes an overlay. Keep this vertical order for every project:
Map the script to B-roll before you search for footage:

Picture-in-picture (PiP) is simply an overlay clip scaled down so the clip below stays visible. In CapCut desktop: drag the clip onto a track above the main track, select it, and in the Video - Basic panel change Scale and Position (or drag the corners in the player).
Right-click a clip to find options like Switch to main track / overlay in recent CapCut desktop versions, or simply drag it up or down. Menu names change between releases, so check the right-click menu of your build.
| Setting | Where in CapCut | Good use | Pitfall |
|---|---|---|---|
| Opacity | Video - Basic - Blend / Opacity | Soft texture or light leak at 20-40% | Half-transparent B-roll that makes both layers unreadable |
| Blend mode Screen | Video - Basic - Blend - Mode | Light leaks, dust, particles shot on black | Washing out dark scenes |
| Blend mode Multiply | Same | Paper textures, dark overlays on white | Crushing faces into shadow |
| Overlay / Soft light | Same | Subtle color and contrast tint | Stacking several until colors look wrong |
| Mask | Video - Mask | Round PiP, split screen | Hard edges without feather |
Exact panel names and positions move between CapCut releases. If you do not see Blend under Basic, select the clip and scan the tabs of the right-hand properties panel.
Unrelated stock footage ("people shaking hands" for everything), constant opacity shifts, and picture-in-picture frames on every line. Each one tells the viewer that the visuals do not matter - and they stop watching them.
