A great export is useless if nobody taps on it or everyone swipes away in the first second. In this lesson you align your hook, title and thumbnail into one coherent promise - one that makes the right viewer stop, and that the video actually keeps. You finish the module deliverable here: metadata templates that sit next to the export presets from lesson 6.1.
On a short-form feed the video starts playing by itself, so the first two seconds are your real thumbnail. A strong hook stacks three parts, ideally in both the spoken line and the on-screen text:
HOOK FORMULAS (fill the brackets)
1. "Stop [common action] - do [better action] instead."
2. "[Number] [things] I wish I knew before [goal]."
3. "This [tool/trick] saved me [concrete result]."
4. "You're [doing X] wrong. Here's the [time] fix."
5. "[Surprising result] - and it took [short time]."
EXAMPLES
"Stop exporting at 4K - do this for Reels instead."
"3 CapCut cuts that took my retention from 30% to 55%."
Platforms read your title, caption, on-screen text and speech to understand who should see the video. Write for a person first, and make sure the words people search for actually appear.
TITLE FORMULA
[Outcome or problem] + [specific detail] + [context/audience]
"Sharper Reels exports in CapCut - settings for beginners"
CAPTION TEMPLATE
Line 1: repeat the promise in different words (shows in the feed)
Line 2: one concrete takeaway or question to invite comments
Line 3: 2-5 relevant hashtags, specific before broad
e.g. #capcuttutorial #videoediting #reels
METADATA CHECKLIST
[ ] title matches what the video actually shows
[ ] main keyword appears in title AND caption AND is spoken
[ ] no recycled title from a previous video
[ ] caption text proofread (names, numbers, language)
Title length limits and how much text shows in the feed differ per platform and change over time. Treat "keep the key words in the first 40 characters or so" as a starting point and check how your title is cut off on a real phone.
A clickbait title can raise clicks, but when the first seconds do not deliver, viewers swipe away and retention drops. Those early retention signals weigh heavily on how far a video gets distributed.
Before you write anything, fill one row per video. If a column does not match the others, fix it before publishing.
| Audience pain | Hook line | Title candidate | Thumbnail concept | CTA |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Uploads look blurry after posting | "Your Reels are blurry because of one setting." | Fix blurry Reels exports in CapCut | Split frame: blurry vs sharp, text "BLURRY?" | Save this for your next export |
| Edits take too long | "I cut editing time in half with 3 shortcuts." | 3 CapCut shortcuts for faster edits | Face + keyboard, text "2X FASTER" | Comment which one you use |
| Nobody watches past 3 s | "Your first 2 seconds are losing viewers." | Hook formula for Shorts that keeps viewers | Timer "0:02" in big type | Follow for part 2 |
On Shorts, Reels and TikTok the thumbnail is the cover frame shown on your profile grid, in search and sometimes in feeds. It is displayed small and often cropped, so design for the smallest version.
The thumbnail creates the emotion, the title adds the specific detail, and the hook proves it immediately. If all three say the exact same words, you waste two of them.
Change one variable at a time and write down what you expected before you look at the numbers. Some platforms offer built-in title or thumbnail tests; where they do not, compare similar videos posted at similar times.
| Variant | Change made | Hypothesis | Result metric |
|---|---|---|---|
| A (control) | Hook: "Here's how I export Reels" | Baseline | 3-s hold rate, average view duration |
| B | Hook: "Your Reels are blurry because of one setting" | Pain-first hook holds more viewers | 3-s hold rate |
| C | Cover text "BLURRY?" instead of "EXPORT TIPS" | Question drives more profile clicks | Views from profile / search |
| D | Title adds "for beginners" | Narrower audience, better retention | Average view duration, completion |

Recycled titles with weak hooks, covers that are unreadable on a phone, and ignoring the first-second retention signal. Check the retention graph after 24 hours - it tells you more than the view count.
